Reiki

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is Japanese for “universal life energy”. Rei means universal and ki or chi is the vital life energy that flows through every living thing.
Reiki is said to date back many thousands of years but was rediscovered by Dr Mikao Usui. Dr Usui, a theologian, experienced an enlightenment which developed the practice we know as Reiki. He studied traditional Chinese medicine and Western medicine, numerology and astrology, and psychic and clairvoyant development. Usui also took Zen Buddhist training in 1922 for about three years.

During a Reiki session, the client will lie on a bed, fully clothed, whilst the therapist works on or just above the client. At times this can be referred to as 'hands on healing'. When the therapist works above the client, they will be working within the aura, sometimes balancing the chakras.

Everyone has seven main chakras. These consist of: Root or Base chakra (bottom of the back/pelvis area), Sacral chakra (just below the navel), Solar Plexus chakra, Heart chakra, Throat chakra, Third Eye chakra (middle of the forehead) and the Crown chakra (top of the head).

Each chakra represents aspects of our consciousness:  Base chakra governs Physical Needs and Security. Sacral governs Sexuality, Emotions, and Desires. Solar Plexus governs Power. The Heart governs Love, Forgiveness, and Compassion. Throat governs Communication. Third Eye governs Intuition and Reasoning. The Crown governs Spirituality and Understanding.
Each chakra is a differrent colour: Red Base - Orange Sacral -Yellow Solar Plexus - Green Heart - Blue Throat - Indigo Third Eye - Violet Crown.

Our chakras can become blocked, clogged with stagnated energy, spin irregularly or backwards or can even become distorted or torn. When a Reiki therapist is working, they are seeking to balance and re-align your chakras to enable you to feel clear and balanced. As well as using Reiki to balance the chakras, people can also use crystals. There are many different varieties of crystals and many different combinations but an example could be: Red Jasper, Carnelian, Yellow Jasper, Aventurine, Sodalite, Amethyst, Quartz.

Reiki is a gentle but powerful healing energy and a Reiki treatment balances all the main energy systems in the body helping to bring the whole self into a state of harmony.

People experience different effects from Reiki, some people feel a sensation of heat coming from the therapists hands, others feel tingly sensations, people can see vivid colours and feel high emotions, for others there is just a strong sense of relaxation. A Reiki treatment would hope to always give a feeling of well-being and relaxation. There are different reports about Reiki and contra-indications, the two people to avoid giving a Reiki treatment to are if the client suffers from epilepsy or if they have a pace maker. My advice if there are any other doubts about giving a treatment is to contact one of the professional bodies for advice for example: http://www.reiki-evolution.co.uk

Reiki Precepts:
For today only: Do not anger; Do not worry
Be humble
Be honest in your work
Be compassionate to yourself and others

The art of giving a Reiki treatment has a lot to do with your intention. Personally, I have a mantra that I repeat prior to giving a treatment. "For the greatest good, for the highest good. The Reiki energy will flow wherever it is needed."

There are various types of Reiki - Tera-Mai, Rainbow, Seichem. I am attuned to Tera-Mai - a form of Reiki much inspired by Kathleen Milner.

As well as receiving Reiki face-to-face, practitioners of level 2 and above can send distance healing if requested. To book a one-one or distance Reiki session, click here.
